SBI will send OTPs to both your old and new mobile numbers after you have registered the new phone number. You should now send ACTIVATE, followed by OTP and reference number to 567676 through both the mobile numbers in 4 hours. SBI updates the record after both messages go through.
Branch is your only route, since net banking and ATM both depend on an OTP to the old number for verification. You should visit the branch with your passbook, any one of the valid ID proofs like Aadhaar or PAN Card, along with the filled-up request form available at the branch. Your signature is then verified, the number is changed in the core banking system, and you get an SMS confirmation after that. There's no fee here either.
Net banking and ATM requests usually reflect within 24 to 48 hours after the OTP step clears. Branch requests take longer, sometimes stretching to a week depending on the branch and account type.
*T&C Apply
An SBI customer, Rohan Mehta from Delhi, faced this problem when he wanted to transfer Rs. 25,000 to his landlord. The OTP was sent to the old SIM that he had changed 8 months back. Using his Aadhaar Card and Passbook, he managed to change his number within 3 days. The transfer went through right after.
Three official ways exist to change your SBI mobile number, and which one fits depends entirely on whether your old SIM still receives messages. Update it the same week you switch numbers. Everything from OTPs to fraud alerts depends on that one detail being right.
