Banks & NBFCs Offers
With deposits up 18.8%, HDFC Bank approaches its September-quarter results amid expectations of higher earnings, though analysts remain concerned about funding costs and lending margins.
Key Highlights
17 October 2026 is the date set for the board to consider the results in its notice issued on 22 September 2026. Brokerages expect higher interest income, but narrower margins could limit the immediate profit gain. Over subsequent quarters, their focus remains on the cost of funding further lending.
HDFC Bank added deposits faster than loans during the September quarter. Our calculation puts the difference between their annual growth rates at 2.5 percentage points. That is a funding development worth separating from the profit forecast: the bank expanded its deposit base alongside its lending business, rather than reporting credit growth alone.
Our view is that borrowers should read this as evidence of funding growth, not as a promise of cheaper credit. A household’s repayment depends on its loan terms. For applicants comparing loan options, the relevant figures remain the offered interest rate and repayment schedule. HDFC Bank’s aggregate deposit growth does not establish the price of an individual loan.
Axis Direct expects lending growth to remain broad-based and foreign currency deposits to support funding. Its assessment, published on 16 October 2026, forecasts some sequential margin pressure. The brokerage also expects operating efficiency to contain expenses and healthy fee income to offset weaker treasury income. Those are the offsets supporting its earnings outlook.
Kotak Institutional Equities expects the gross bad-loan ratio to remain stable. Its focus includes the progress of margins and the effect of foreign currency deposits. For these analysts, lending income has to be read alongside the cost of raising funds. Their profit forecasts therefore reflect more than the increase in HDFC Bank’s deposits.
The selected estimates published on 16 October 2026 differ considerably. JM Financial projects a relatively small annual increase, while ICICI Securities expects a stronger result. The following figures refer to forecast profit after tax, or PAT.
These forecasts reflect different assumptions about income, expenses and provisions. They are individual brokerage estimates, rather than a single consensus figure. The relatively wide profit range is also why the strongest estimate should not be presented as HDFC Bank’s expected result without attribution.
Within HDFC Bank’s approximately ₹33.275 lakh crore in period-end deposits, time deposits expanded faster than current and savings account balances. The figures appear in its 4 October 2026 disclosure, reference SE/2026-27/118. Funding changed in composition as well as size, with time deposits accounting for a greater share of the total.
That distinction connects directly with the analysts’ margin concerns. The Department of Financial Services’ banking guidance dated 6 January 2026 describes current accounts as generally non-interest-bearing, while savings and fixed deposits earn interest. HDFC Bank’s business update records the balances; the earnings assessment also requires the cost attached to them. The bank’s lending profit has to be assessed against what it pays for those deposits.
The 4 October 2026 release of provisional business volumes followed HDFC Bank’s 22 September 2026 announcement of the board-meeting date. The latter disclosure said the September results would be subject to a limited review by statutory auditors.
A further notice dated 13 October 2026, signed by company secretary Ajay Agarwal, scheduled an earnings call for 4 pm IST on 17 October. The bank said senior management would discuss the financial results with analysts and investors.
HDFC Bank enters the earnings announcement with deposits growing faster than gross advances. Brokerages are assessing how much income remains after funding costs and provisions. HDFC Bank has reported the deposit increase; the profit estimates belong to the brokerages and await comparison with the scheduled results.
The board will consider HDFC Bank’s September-quarter results on 17 October 2026. Its earnings call is scheduled for 4 pm IST that day.
Period-end deposits increased 18.8% year-on-year to approximately ₹33.275 lakh crore as of 30 September 2026, according to the bank’s provisional disclosure.
HDFC Bank may earn more interest from a larger loan book while retaining less income relative to its assets. Analysts are examining lending yields alongside funding costs, since higher business volumes alone do not show how profitable that growth has been.
HDFC Bank maintains a financial-results page containing quarterly announcements and supporting investor documents. Its earnings-call notice also states that an audio recording will be made available.
A higher profit figure does not settle the market’s assessment of HDFC Bank’s earnings. Investors also examine margins and the outlook against their expectations. HDFC Bank’s current preview contains differing forecasts, not a prediction of its share-price response.
