IDBI Bank earned ₹2,205 crore in Q2 FY27, a 39% year-on-year decline. Interest income rose 20%, while a previous NSDL investment gain affected the comparison.
Key Highlights
IDBI Bank’s October 17, 2026, results put September-quarter net profit at ₹2,205 crore, against ₹3,627 crore a year earlier. Interest earnings rose, although overall profit fell.
The results have drawn investor attention because the headline profit decline differs considerably from the performance of regular banking operations. While lower reported earnings could influence short-term market sentiment, interest income growth and improved asset quality provide a more positive picture of the lender’s operations.
An investment sale had added ₹1,699 crore to IDBI Bank's earnings in Q2 FY26. The money came from selling its holding in National Securities Depository Limited (NSDL). That one-time receipt had lifted the comparison figure.
The bank’s October 17, 2026, financial statement confirmed that excluding this gain, operating profit increased 59% and net profit rose 14%. The decline in reported profit was therefore significantly influenced by the previous year’s exceptional income rather than a fall in net interest income.
The following table compares the bank’s performance during the September quarters of FY26 and FY27.
The bank earned more from its core lending operations, with NII rising 29%. Non-interest income, however, declined sharply because the previous year’s NSDL transaction was not repeated. Net interest margin also improved, indicating that the difference between interest earnings and interest costs widened during the quarter.
The fall in quarterly profit does not automatically increase loan EMIs or reduce deposit returns. IDBI Bank’s financial results also showed 18% growth in net advances and 17% growth in deposits during the September quarter. Its gross NPA ratio declined, indicating an improvement in the proportion of loans classified as non-performing.
For borrowers, the distinction between reported profit and lending performance is important. In our assessment, the 39% earnings decline should not be interpreted as a similar contraction in lending activity. Loan repayments continue to depend on the applicable interest rate and loan agreement. Borrowers can use our personal loan EMI calculator to examine repayment amounts, although quarterly profit figures do not directly determine individual EMIs.
IDBI Bank’s October 17 financial statement identified the exceptional NSDL investment gain as the principal reason behind the high comparison base. Without that transaction, the bank recorded growth in both net profit and operating profit. As of 30 September 2026, IDBI Bank’s provision coverage ratio, including technical write-offs, stood at 99.24%, while its capital adequacy ratio was 27.10%.
The 39% fall includes the effect of last year’s NSDL proceeds. Interest earnings and operating costs therefore need to be examined separately from that sale. Sustaining the latest NII growth while maintaining loan quality will be important for subsequent quarterly performance.
The preceding quarter, Q1 FY27, recorded ₹2,115 crore in profit and ₹3,486 crore in NII. The September quarter subsequently recorded sequential growth in both indicators, even though reported profit declined compared with Q2 FY26.
On October 14, 2026, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs approved Fairfax Financial Holdings’ subsidiary buying 60.72% of IDBI Bank for ₹52,878.08 crore. The government’s announcement and October 16 public update cover the terms. Regulatory requirements still apply.
Profit of ₹2,205 crore marked a 39% year-on-year fall for IDBI Bank in Q2 FY27, against last year’s NSDL-backed figure. NII nevertheless rose 29%, and bad-loan ratios improved.
The results present a different picture once exceptional income is separated from regular operations. The results do not alter existing loan agreements. Investors also have higher NII and a lower NPA ratio to examine.
The previous year’s profit included an exceptional gain of ₹1,699 crore from the NSDL investment sale. Excluding that gain, IDBI Bank reported 14% growth in net profit during Q2 FY27.
It rose from ₹3,285 crore to ₹4,228 crore, or 29%. Net interest margin moved from 3.71% to 4.11% over the same period.
Yes. Gross NPAs fell from 2.65% in September 2025 to 2.12% in September 2026. Net NPAs declined from 0.21% to 0.17%.
Net profit includes income beyond regular lending operations. IDBI Bank’s previous-year earnings benefited from the NSDL investment sale, while the latest quarter recorded higher NII without that exceptional gain.
The quarterly figures do not indicate a decline in lending volumes. Net advances increased 18% year-on-year, while NII grew 29%. The reported profit decline mainly reflects the previous year’s exceptional income.
