Nuvama expects India’s power sector profits to rise up to 11% in Q2FY27 as stronger demand lifts generation, while coal supplies remain under close watch.
Key Highlights
India’s power companies are expected to report stronger Q2FY27 earnings after increased electricity demand kept thermal plants busier. Nuvama Institutional Equities’ outlook, reported on 13 October 2026, links the expected growth to higher plant utilisation and potential incentives for thermal producers.
Electricity exchange prices also rose during this period, while coal inventories declined amid higher power demand. Coal stocks were falling more slowly in October as fuel deliveries improved, government updates showed. Plants still need regular deliveries to keep generating electricity and replenish reserves for later periods of heavy demand.
Keeping electricity flowing from power stations depends on fuel arriving regularly. The Ministry of Coal’s update published on 12 October 2026 said coal was being redistributed to vulnerable stations according to their requirements. Plants with critically low stocks remained under close monitoring, with uninterrupted generation the stated objective.
Our view is that the earnings forecast needs to be read alongside power distributors’ purchase costs. Higher profits for generators do not establish savings for electricity users. For households repaying loans, the relevant expense remains the electricity bill they pay. Treating a producer’s profit forecast as household financial relief would go beyond what Nuvama’s outlook shows.
Thermal producers responded with greater plant utilisation, supporting the brokerage’s earnings forecast. Potential incentives also feature in its assessment, although the outlook describes expected profits rather than completed financial results.
PL Capital reached a similar broad conclusion in its “Power – Jul-Sep’26 Earnings Preview – A Good Quarter Led By Power Demand Uptick”, published on 7 October 2026. It expects approximately 10% profit-after-tax growth across its coverage excluding Coal India. Its company review also records uneven generation performance, showing why the sector outlook should not be applied equally to every producer.
The figures below separate the profit forecasts from the government’s subsequent fuel-supply update. October deliveries describe conditions after Q2FY27 ended.
The Ministry of Coal credited stronger railway movement with improving deliveries. Its 12 October release, ID 2322065, said supplies were keeping pace with daily consumption, while stations with low stocks continued to receive attention.
Electricity trading grew 12.7% year-on-year in the quarter covered by IEX’s update, reported on 6 October 2026. Trading in renewable energy certificates fell over that period. The growth figure therefore applies to electricity trading, rather than every segment of the exchange.
The Coal Ministry then addressed fuel-stock concerns on 9 October 2026. In “Coal Supply To Power Plants Gathers Pace In October”, Release ID 2321166, it explained that the critical-stock classification is an early warning. The classification does not mean a plant has exhausted its coal or faces immediate closure.
Nuvama’s Q2FY27 forecast reflects a stronger quarter for electricity demand and thermal generation. Company results will establish the actual profit growth. The government’s October updates show improved fuel deliveries, with low-stock stations still under monitoring.
Nuvama expects power-sector profits to rise up to 11% year-on-year in Q2FY27, with major thermal producers projected to record 8–9% growth.
Q2FY27 covers July, August and September 2026, within the financial year ending March 2027.
Plant load factor measures a power plant’s capacity utilisation over a period. Nuvama identifies higher thermal utilisation as a driver of its earnings outlook.
Nuvama’s earnings estimate does not establish a share-price outcome. PL Capital’s review also shows that operational performance differed between companies.
The cited Nuvama figures are earnings estimates. They should remain separate from the profits companies disclose in their Q2FY27 results.
