CBDT has reminded around 12,000 tax professionals about pending AY 2026–27 audit reports. The deadline for filing reports was 21 October 2026.
Key Highlights
In New Delhi on 13 October 2026, officials told PTI that around 12,000 tax professionals had been asked to submit pending audit reports for AY 2026–27. The Income Tax Department had already extended the deadline to 21 October 2026. Yet unfinished submissions continued to cause concern, prompting the reported outreach.
For covered businesses, the audit report comes first in the filing timetable; the corresponding income-tax return follows in November. The audit records information used for tax assessment. Failure to furnish a required report can attract penalty proceedings, although relief is available where the taxpayer proves reasonable cause.
The October deadline applies to the audit cases covered by CBDT’s extension, rather than every income-tax filer. For those businesses, the report must move through the filing process, including the taxpayer’s acceptance and verification where required. An auditor’s upload is not the final step in the department’s Form 3CA-3CD workflow.
The Income Tax Department’s filing manual directs taxpayers to accept the submitted report through their Worklist and electronically verify it. Successful verification generates an acknowledgement receipt number. That gives the taxpayer a record of completion instead of leaving the report pending for acceptance.
When the extension was announced on 28 September 2026, Sumeet Hemkar, Partner at Deloitte, said businesses needed time to reconcile income-tax data with GST records and accounting information. He described the relief for audit cases outside transfer pricing as “a welcome relief”.
Amit Agarwal, Senior Partner at Nangia & Co LLP, said the additional time would help businesses complete audits and reconciliations, with proper support for information reported in their returns. These comments addressed the September extension. The practical work they identified remains relevant to pending submissions: resolve differences in the accounts before completing the filing.
Previous-year submissions provided the benchmark, officials said. Professionals entered the reminder group when their current audit-report filings were below 50% of that earlier volume. Across filings received, the count had passed 19.5 lakh reports, officials disclosed on 13 October 2026. The reminders sought faster filing of the remaining reports.
Our reading of the selection method is that the 50% comparison flags lower filing activity, rather than measuring how much work each practice has completed. Last year’s figures do not show how many audits a professional has taken up this year. Fewer submissions may have prompted the reminder, but that alone does not establish a missed deadline or an error in any report already filed.
The department expanded SAKSHAM NUDGE to tax professionals because of their role in accurate reporting and timely compliance. By 15 October 2026, officials were still pointing to a significant volume of pending reports, even after taxpayers had received additional time to file.
Professional bodies had sought additional preparation time before the original deadline. The earlier request for an October 31 extension, reported on 22 September 2026, raised concerns about the short interval after the non-audit filing season.
The deadline extension was on 28 September 2026 when CBDT issued Circular No. 07/2026. This circular applies to taxpayers listed under Serial No. 2. In the table below Explanation 2, to Section 139(1) of the Income-tax Act, 1961. The revised filing dates are given below:
The November return deadline does not move the audit-report deadline into November. The financial year attached to these filings is FY 2025–26, which CBDT’s circular pairs with AY 2026–27.
CBDT’s latest outreach asks professionals to finish pending reports within the September extension. Covered taxpayers have until 21 October 2026 for the audit report. Their corresponding income-tax return is due a month later, on 21 November 2026.
The extended deadline is 21 October 2026 for cases covered by CBDT Circular No. 07/2026, dated 28 September 2026.
Officials said their current filings were below 50% of their previous-year audit-report volume. CBDT sent reminders to encourage pending submissions.
Yes, for the specified category. Audit reports are due on 21 October 2026, followed by income-tax returns on 21 November 2026.
Yes. CBDT moved the covered audit-report deadline from 30 September 2026 to 21 October 2026 through its September order.
The Form 3CA-3CD process also requires taxpayer acceptance and electronic verification. The department issues an acknowledgement receipt number after successful verification.
