Dark Days Are Back? Power Crisis Hits North India in Early Summer
Outages have come back to India’s north. These are quite alarming because summer is yet to reach its peak. Power shortages were observed in states such as Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
The peak power demand in India has seen an increase of around 17%. From 214.9GW on 1 April to a record high of 270.8 GW on May 21st. The situation would only worsen with time. States which were able to cope two years ago are now struggling hard with the problem.

It has been the common people who have suffered most. Households have experienced unforeseen power cuts. The shop owners waste their valuable working hours because of power cuts. The clinics and hospitals might also face difficulties from power failure.
Here is the account of electricity crisis in north Indian states during the month of April 2026:
There has been transmission loss and inadequate transformation capacity, which leads to shortage of electricity. Distribution of electric power is difficult within states such as Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, where electric power shortages exist in many rural and semi-rural areas. Urban centers receive top priority. Yet there are shortages in many areas.
It appears that both supply-related issues as well as poor infrastructure contribute to the crisis.
The power distribution agencies rely heavily on long-term purchase agreements with pre-fixed capacity.
However, when the demand goes beyond contracted capacity, they need to purchase additional electricity from short term power exchanges. Such purchases can cost more since they have to be made during the peak period.
India cut 2.3 terawatt-hours of solar energy output between May to December 2025. This was due to grid security reasons. According to experts of IEEFA, the issue of insufficient battery storage can be solved by using battery storage. Otherwise, the evening and night-time power deficit issue cannot be resolved.
The Indian grid capacity has increased to record levels of approximately 65 GW in fiscal year 2025-2026, according to the ministry of power. The government was confident about meeting the national demand.
The north Indian power crisis is not only about power generation. It is also a question of how to provide electricity to everyone by utilizing old equipment and transformers. The problems will keep occurring in the coming years in the absence of upgrading the infrastructure and use of batteries.
Why are power cuts being felt in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand before peak summer even now?
The peak summer heat is causing record power demand, and several states are still using old transformers and very frail power lines. The grid cannot keep up, so power cuts are seen both rural as well as urban areas.
In a country like India, which has achieved so much development, how come in 2026 we still are suffering from power and water shortages?
The demand for electricity and water is rising at a faster pace than infrastructure development and in many states, old power grids, poor storage facilities, high power transmission losses, and extreme heat have resulted in scarcity of resources.
