Apple Pay could reach India by October 2026 with Visa and Mastercard credit cards first, while missing UPI may restrict its early everyday payment use.
The development affects Apple users in India because an iPhone could become a contactless payment device at compatible point-of-sale terminals. In the short term, eligible cardholders may be able to leave their physical cards in their wallets more often. The limitation is UPI. Indian consumers routinely pay through UPI QR codes at stores, restaurants, taxis and small merchants, so a card-only Apple Pay launch would cover a narrower set of daily transactions. A later UPI integration could significantly expand where the service can be used.
For an eligible customer, Apple Pay could make a routine card payment shorter. A supported credit card can be stored digitally, after which the user can authenticate the payment and tap a compatible Apple device against an NFC-enabled payment terminal. According to the August 9 report, Apple intends to begin in India using a framework similar to the card-based model it operates in other international markets.
This could be of benefit in supermarkets, hotels, airports, restaurants and organised retail outlets where contactless card terminals are already in place. It could also be of interest to those who don't want to give a card to customers when they check out. However, an iPhone owner should not assume that Apple Pay would replace Google Pay, PhonePe or another UPI application immediately. Without UPI, Apple Pay would initially remain tied mainly to eligible cards and compatible card terminals.
India's payment habits explain the gap. Press Information Bureau (PIB) released a statement from the Ministry of Finance on 20th July 2026, stating that UPI has onboarded almost 55.49 crore users till June 2026. The same Lok Sabha reply mentioned that UPI transactions valued at ₹314.23 lakh crore, worth 24,161.69 crore, were made in FY 2025-26. With this exact data, it has been proven that there is a connection between UPI access and the number of times a new payment application is used in India.
Pine Labs CEO Amrish Rau has given one of the strongest named industry signals around the launch. During the company's Q1 earnings call, Rau said, "We do believe Apple Pay will enter the market before the end of this year." His comments were reported by Business Standard on August 9, 2026. Payments companies expect Apple's arrival to encourage more iPhone users to make contactless credit card payments.
The immediate solution for Apple appears to be a phased entry. The company can first complete agreements with card issuers, enable eligible Visa and Mastercard cards and establish its NFC payment experience. UPI would require another route. Business Standard reported that Apple would need NPCI clearance and a sponsor bank to support UPI payments. The Department of Financial Services, Ministry of Finance, also identifies UPI as a system combining multiple participating bank accounts, fund routing and merchant payments through mobile applications.
From a consumer perspective, the difference is simple. Apple Pay's reported first phase would convert an eligible iPhone into another way of presenting a credit card. UPI goes further by connecting bank accounts and QR-based merchant payments. That is why the absence of UPI would not make Apple Pay unusable, but it could keep the first user base concentrated among cardholders who already spend regularly at NFC-enabled merchants.
LoansJagat's view is that Apple Pay's first real test in India will not simply be whether an iPhone can replace a physical card. Adoption will depend on whether users find enough situations during a normal week where tapping an iPhone is easier than scanning a UPI QR code. For readers looking at the technology behind digitally stored cards, LoansJagat published a payment tokenisation explainer on April 15, 2026, covering how payment credentials can be replaced by digital tokens during transactions.

Several parts of the reported launch are becoming more specific, although Apple has not announced the final product for India. Business Standard reported that Apple and major credit card issuers have been discussing the share Apple would receive when customers pay using the service.
The latest reported position can be separated from details that are still awaiting official confirmation.
The table shows why the October date should still be described as reported or tipped, rather than confirmed. The latest report relies on people familiar with the launch preparations. Business Standard also said Apple did not respond to its email before publication. Apple will need to disclose the final bank list, eligible cards and launch date before Indian consumers know exactly who can use the service.
UPI has become part of everyday checkout behaviour because the merchant does not always need a conventional card terminal. A printed or digital QR code can be enough for a supported UPI payment. That gives the system a presence across both large businesses and much smaller merchants.
Apple Pay's reported first version would operate differently. An eligible card would need to work with Apple Pay, and the merchant would require a compatible payment terminal for a contactless transaction. For someone using a supported credit card at a mall or airport, that difference may barely be noticed. For a person paying a vegetable seller, auto driver or neighbourhood shop through a UPI QR code, the missing UPI option would be obvious.
The Ministry of Finance's July 20, 2026 figures also help explain the scale Apple would initially be leaving outside its wallet. With 55.49 crore UPI users already onboarded by June 2026, UPI is not a secondary feature in India's payment market. It is a payment habit used across income groups and merchant categories.
Apple could address that gap later by pursuing the required UPI arrangements. No source reviewed for this article confirms when such integration would happen. Until Apple or the relevant payment authorities announce it, any UPI rollout date would remain speculation.

The plans to launch Apple Pay in India have already been delayed once, from 2026 to 2027. Apple is negotiating with multiple Indian banks and international credit card companies, according to a Reuters report on February 26, 2026, citing Bloomberg. The report mentioned ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank and Axis Bank in particular, and that Apple planned to launch the service in the middle of next year. Reuters was unable to independently verify Bloomberg's report.
The middle of 2026 passed without an official launch. By August 9, Business Standard was reporting a revised preparation window covering the end of September or October. Its report also provided more detail on the commercial talks between Apple and Indian credit card issuers. Apple had reportedly discussed taking 15-20 bps from the interchange earned on a credit card payment, while some large issuers were pushing for around 10 bps. The fee under discussion would reportedly come from the bank rather than being added separately to the customer's bill or the merchant's payment.
The progression from February to August suggests that the technical concept was only part of the launch process. Commercial agreements with banks also had to be resolved. That could explain why an earlier mid-year expectation moved towards the September-October period, although Apple has not publicly explained the delay.
Apple Pay's India entry now has a more specific reported window, with the latest August 9, 2026 information pointing towards the end of September or October. The first version is expected to focus on Visa and Mastercard credit cards, allowing eligible Apple users to make contactless payments at compatible terminals. Apple has still not confirmed the date, banks or supported cards.
UPI remains the biggest missing piece. Government data published on July 20, 2026 shows that UPI already reaches 55.49 crore users, giving it a role far beyond conventional card acceptance. Apple Pay can still find an audience among iPhone-owning credit card customers, but broader everyday adoption may depend on what comes after the card launch. The next major update to watch is not simply whether Apple Pay arrives in October, but whether Apple eventually connects its wallet to India's UPI payment network.
Apple has not officially announced the reported October 2026 India launch or confirmed participating banks yet.
Business Standard reported on August 9, 2026, that preparations were targeting late September or October 2026.
UPI is reportedly not planned for the initial launch. Future support would require additional payment arrangements.
Visa and Mastercard credit cards are expected first, but Apple has not released an official eligible-card list.
Not initially. Without UPI, Apple Pay would primarily serve eligible contactless card payments rather than everyday UPI QR transactions.
