Apple Pay has launched in India with eligible Axis Bank credit cards, allowing customers to pay through supported Apple devices at participating stores and online.
Key Highlights
For customers who qualify, checkout becomes shorter. Access remains limited by the card, device and merchant involved, so owning an iPhone alone is not enough. Apple has introduced support for iPhone, Apple Watch and iPad, with Mac support coming soon.
Apple Pay lets customers use a stored card at a compatible contactless reader. In apps and online, customers select Apple Pay and approve the purchase after checking their details. The merchant must accept both Apple Pay and the payment network behind the customer’s card.
An iPhone or Apple Watch can also make in-store payments without Wi-Fi or mobile data. Apple says the payment uses the device’s Near Field Communication, or NFC, chip. Transaction history may update only after reconnection. The practical benefit is that a customer’s phone does not need an internet connection for every shop payment.
Jennifer Bailey, Apple’s vice president of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet, highlighted reduced payment information entry. Axis Bank MD and CEO Amitabh Chaudhry described greater payment choice for credit card customers. Both statements accompanied the 30 September 2026 launch.
Mastercard’s India and South Asia president, Gautam Aggarwal, highlighted tokenisation. It protects card details during transactions by using a secure token. These are the launch partners’ assessments. Apple’s security guidance separately explains that device authentication and transaction-specific security codes protect payments.
Apple’s India announcement specifies the following requirements. Customers need to check their software version as well as the device model.
The requirements appear in the official release dated 30 September 2026. Apple names Blinkit, Croma, Zomato, Tata 1mg and Ixigo among launch merchants.
Apple’s setup instructions, published on 13 July 2026, describe the Wallet process:
The menu label does not establish India-specific debit-card eligibility. Customers also need an Apple Account signed in and authentication configured. If enrolment fails, Apple advises contacting the card issuer.
An Apple Watch needs its own card setup. Customers open the Watch app on their paired iPhone, select My Watch, choose Wallet & Apple Pay, and tap Add Card. An iPad uses Wallet & Apple Pay under Settings.
On a Face ID iPhone, the customer double-clicks the side button, authenticates and holds the top of the phone near the reader. A Touch ID model uses the Home button and fingerprint authentication.
Apple Watch users double-click the side button and hold the display near the terminal. Customers should wait for confirmation before moving the device away.
For app or website purchases, customers select Apple Pay, review their payment and delivery details, then authenticate as prompted. Apple’s payment instructions distinguish these online steps from tapping at a shop.
Apple says it charges customers no fee for using Apple Pay. The card issuer’s usual charges still apply. Paying through Wallet does not change how the underlying card works.
The borrower-focused assessment for LoansJagat is straightforward: easier payment should not be treated as cheaper credit. Apple Pay changes the checkout process, while the bank’s card terms continue to govern the account. A customer choosing a card still needs to compare its charges and repayment terms.
That distinction also limits what can be claimed about the launch. Faster authentication does not itself establish savings on borrowing. The benefit confirmed by Apple is payment convenience, not a reduction in the issuer’s charges.
Reporting dated 18 September 2026 had pointed to an October rollout with Axis Bank credit cards. It cited people familiar with the discussions and described unresolved commercial terms with HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank.
The 30 September 2026 launch preceded that reported window. The earlier October timing was a reported expectation, not an official launch date.
Apple allows customers to suspend Apple Pay through Find My’s Lost Mode. Payment cards can also be removed remotely.
For financial cyber fraud, the Ministry of Home Affairs’ 6 April 2022 release, ID 1814120, identifies 1930 as the reporting helpline. Customers can also lodge complaints through the government’s financial-fraud reporting facility. These are general reporting channels, not an Apple Pay-specific process.
Apple Pay gives eligible customers another way to use their credit card. Successful use depends on bank verification, a supported device and merchant acceptance. The card’s existing terms continue after setup.
RuPay cards are excluded from the initial rollout. Eligible Axis Bank Visa and Mastercard credit cards receive access.
An iPhone or Apple Watch can make in-store payments without Wi-Fi or mobile data. Online shopping still requires connectivity.
Customers must complete verification, authenticate the purchase and use a compatible reader. Card enrolment alone does not complete a payment.
For eligible Indian customers, Apple Pay changes how purchases are authorised and paid. It does not change the bank’s card terms.
Apple’s payment instructions provide iPad support for app and web purchases. Customers use an iPhone or Apple Watch for in-store contactless payments.
