EPFO may launch BHIM-UPI claim settlement within 30 days, allowing members to file claims digitally and receive approved funds in linked bank accounts faster nationwide.
Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation members may soon file eligible provident fund claims through the BHIM app and receive the approved amount in their UPI-linked bank account. The time frame is expected to be 30 days, said Central Provident Fund Commissioner Ramesh Krishnamurthy during an interview with IANS in Delhi on July 31, 2026. The change will be made in EPFO, BHIM, banks and the National Payments Corporation of India and could reduce the process between claiming and getting the money paid.
For workers facing a medical bill, unemployment, education expense or another permitted need, the immediate benefit could be fewer portal steps and faster access after approval. Over time, EPFO could also reduce office visits and dependence on paid agents. There are weak spots too. Aadhaar-UAN mismatches, unapproved bank KYC, incorrect service records, failed UPI mapping and fake withdrawal links may still delay or endanger a claim. The facility is not live yet, so members must wait for EPFO’s formal notice.

BHIM could help employees who use UPI daily but find the EPFO portal difficult to navigate. A factory worker, delivery employee or first-time claimant may be able to start a request on a familiar mobile interface instead of moving between several pages. Approved money would still go to the member’s bank account, not to a separate wallet. That keeps the payment linked to verified banking records.
The wider benefit may be seen in smaller towns and industrial belts where an EPFO office visit can mean lost wages and travel costs. A simpler route could also reduce dependence on intermediaries who charge for basic filing. Yet BHIM will not turn PF into an unrestricted cash account. EPF withdrawal conditions, permitted purposes, service requirements and tax rules will continue unless the government separately changes them. Members should avoid frequent withdrawals because the balance supports retirement.
Lokanath Panda, Chief Operating Officer of BLS E-Services, said in June 2026 that digital access could help workers in smaller cities and underserved areas. He also called for strong authentication, real-time fraud monitoring, data protection and regular member awareness. Sharad Chand, Business Head for Wealth Management at Alankit Limited, said easier access should not push members towards repeated withdrawals. Both viewpoints underline the same risk: speed can help in an emergency, but weak safeguards can expose retirement savings.
EPFO needs more than a button inside BHIM. Members should see the eligible amount, claim category, bank account ending digits and expected processing time before submission. A rejected claim should identify the record requiring correction. Failed credits need 1 trackable reference across BHIM, EPFO and the bank. LoansJagat’s analysis is that UPI can shorten the front-end journey, but it cannot remove EPFO’s identity and eligibility checks. That difference should appear inside the app before submission.
The latest statement follows more than a year of system work. EPFO’s Executive Committee reviewed immediate claim credit through UPI at its March 28, 2025 meeting in Srinagar. The Ministry of Labour and Employment said C-DAC was developing interfaces with the State Bank of India and NPCI under the CITES 2.01 upgrade. EPFO, on June 24, 2025, increased the auto settlement limit for admissible advance claims from ₹1 lakh to ₹5 lakh with a target of processing claims within 72 hours.
Testing reported done by June 2026 and public access not reported yet. A LoansJagat review) published on June 22, 2026, told members that UPI and ATM-based PF withdrawals were still pending an official rollout. The July 31 statement gives a fresh 30-day indication after earlier expectations moved several times. The table below separates an approved reform from the proposed BHIM facility.
The table shows why payment speed cannot be judged alone. The Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances found that members were still reporting delays in joint declarations, UAN activation, KYC updates, Aadhaar linking and correction of service details. A BHIM request may move quickly, but the claim can stop when these records do not match. EPFO should test correction requests and failed payments, not only successful claims.
Krishnamurthy told IANS that members would submit claims through BHIM and settlement would reach the UPI-linked bank account. He said the framework could be implemented within 30 days. In another update on August 1, 2026, the EPFO chief said auto-settled claims had reached about 90%, and most fresh claims were expected to finish on the same day or within 2 days. These are operating expectations. Claims requiring employer action, historical verification or member corrections may take longer.
Labour and Employment Minister Mansukh Mandaviya had backed automation when the ₹5 lakh ceiling was announced on June 24, 2025. The government said eligible advances for illness, education, marriage and housing could be processed without human handling after system checks. Employee representatives are likely to judge the BHIM route on 3 points: whether genuine claims move faster, whether rejection reasons help members act, and whether retirement funds stay protected from fraud. Banks and NPCI must also manage account validation and failed-credit reversals without sending members between offices.

Members should log in only through the official EPFO member portal and verify that the UAN is active. The Aadhaar name, date of birth, and mobile number should match EPFO records. Bank KYC must show as approved, and the bank account linked to UPI should belong to the claimant. Old member IDs should be transferred or merged where required. These checks cannot guarantee approval, but they can prevent avoidable failures.
No legitimate PF credit requires a member to enter a UPI PIN for receiving money. EPFO, BHIM, a bank or NPCI will not need a caller to collect an OTP. Members should ignore messages offering early activation, guaranteed approval or paid account correction. The final notification should be checked because EPFO has not yet announced the supported claim types, transaction limits or public launch date.
EPFO Claims via BHIM-UPI Likely Within 30 Days is a significant service update for salaried workers who need quicker access to eligible PF funds. The July 31, 2026 statement gives the proposal a nearer timeline and explains where approved money will go. For many members, the biggest gain may be fewer steps and less dependence on office visits.
The launch will work only when the back-end checks work with the app. EPFO must publish the eligible claim categories, limits, security process, rejection reasons and complaint route before opening the service. Members should update their records and wait for the official notice. Until then, any link claiming that BHIM-based PF withdrawal is already active should be treated as suspicious.
No. EPFO has indicated a rollout within 30 days, but the formal public launch is still awaited.
No. Approved funds are expected to reach the bank account linked with the member’s UPI profile.
No. Eligibility checks, KYC errors, employer records and manual verification may still affect processing time.
Members should check UAN activation, Aadhaar details, approved bank KYC, mobile number and employment records.
It should be safe after the official launch, provided members use BHIM and never share their UPI PIN or OTP.
No. A UPI PIN authorises outgoing payments. It is not required to receive an approved PF credit.
