EPFO members who forget their UAN can recover the 12-digit number online, while activation and fresh allotment now run separately through UMANG Aadhaar face authentication.
Key Highlights
Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation members who forget their Universal Account Number can still retrieve it online in 2026. According to the EPFO Unified Member Portal, an existing UAN can be found through the “Know Your UAN” service after mobile OTP verification. The member can search with Aadhaar, PAN or a PF Member ID.
The immediate problem is a blocked login. A worker may be unable to open the passbook, check an employer’s contribution, update KYC or begin a transfer. After a job change, an old mobile number or a second UAN can create extra correction work. Recovering the original number keeps earlier service records in one place and reduces later follow-ups.

The worker must choose the correct service first. “Forgot Password” is useful only when the UAN is already known. Someone who cannot remember the number should open “Know Your UAN”. The portal then asks for a mobile number, captcha and OTP before it opens the identity search.
Next comes the part where many attempts fail. The name and date of birth must match the EPFO record. An employee listed as “R K Sharma” in an old PF account may not get a result by entering “Raj Kumar Sharma”. One wrong digit in a birth date can stop the search.
The table below separates UAN recovery from activation. Both are online services, but they do not run through the same channel.
Once the number appears, the member should compare it with current and older salary slips. The service history should be checked after login. A worker who changed jobs 3 times may see 3 Member IDs under 1 UAN. That is normal. Finding 2 separate UANs is different and may require a transfer or correction request.
Online recovery can save an EPFO office visit after a worker moves to another city. Consider an employee who left a factory in Pune in 2021 and later joined a logistics company in Hyderabad. The old payslips are gone, the HR contact has changed, and the UAN was never saved. The portal gives that employee a direct starting point.
Workers with several employer records gain the most. Once access returns, they can check whether each Member ID appears under the same UAN, whether the previous employer entered a date of exit, and whether Aadhaar, PAN, and bank details are complete. These checks may prevent a rejected transfer or a delayed claim later.
A failed search does not always mean that EPFO never allotted a UAN. The information may not match. The worker should check an old payslip, Form 11, PF statement, EPFO SMS or joining email before trying again. Payroll teams can often locate the UAN through the establishment record, even when the employee cannot access the old mobile number.
Repeated OTP attempts will not repair a spelling or birth-date error. Where Aadhaar and EPFO records differ, the member may need a joint declaration or an online profile correction, depending on the field involved. EPFO lists 14470 as its member helpdesk. The grievance portal is another route when the employer cannot resolve the record issue.

Payroll advisers usually begin with document matching, not with generating another UAN. That route is safer because a second number can split service history. The member should first identify every PF Member ID, locate the original UAN, and check which account the present employer is using. A duplicate account may take time to transfer or correct.
From an editorial standpoint, forgotten-UAN recovery should be treated as an account audit, not a one-minute login task. After retrieving the number, the employee should inspect the passbook, employer names, exit dates, and KYC status. The LoansJagat guide on finding a PF number through a UAN also explains why the permanent UAN and employer-specific PF numbers should not be treated as the same record.
The present system grew out of a basic problem. Employers often generated UANs during onboarding, but some workers never received the number. Other records carried an old mobile number, a shortened name, or an incorrect date of birth.
The Press Information Bureau announcement dated 9 April 2025, Release ID 2120326, said EPFO allotted 1.26 crore UANs during FY 2024-25. Only 44.68 lakh, or 35.30%, had been activated by members. The government linked the low activation level to the employer-led process and the separate activation step.
EPFO then introduced UAN generation and activation through Aadhaar Face Authentication on UMANG. The app uses Aadhaar details and a live facial check. This change applies to generation and activation. It does not remove “Know Your UAN” for someone who already has a number but has forgotten it.
EPFO has said that the older employer-led process could carry wrong mobile numbers, names, or dates of birth. Some employees also did not receive the UAN created in their name. The UMANG route was introduced to give workers greater control at the start of the account.
Employers still play a role. Payroll teams hold the Member ID and establishment details needed when the online search fails. They can confirm which UAN is linked with present employment, spot a duplicate number and help prepare a correction request.
EPFO has also warned members against paid agents who ask for Aadhaar, PAN, bank details, passwords or OTPs. UAN recovery is free. A worker should type the official portal address directly and avoid links received through unsolicited calls or messages.
A forgotten UAN can be recovered online in 2026 through “Know Your UAN” on the EPFO Member Portal. The member needs mobile OTP verification and matching details from Aadhaar, PAN or a PF Member ID.
The job does not end after the number arrives. The employee should review old Member IDs, service history, exit dates and KYC details. If the portal fails to find the record, the next stop should be the employer, EPFO helpdesk or grievance portal. Creating another UAN may add a second problem to the first one.
A UAN is a 12-digit number that links PF Member IDs created during different jobs.
Can a forgotten UAN be recovered without visiting an EPFO office?
Yes. The member can use “Know Your UAN” on the Member Portal and complete OTP verification.
Which documents can help during UAN recovery?
Aadhaar, PAN, a PF Member ID, an old payslip, and Form 11 are useful starting records.
What happens if the registered mobile number is inactive?
The employee should check old payroll documents, contact the employer, and use EPFO support if needed.
Can a UAN be recovered without an old salary slip?
Yes. Ask the employer for the establishment code and employee ID, then contact EPFO or raise an online grievance.
Should an employee create another UAN after forgetting the old one?
No. The original UAN should be recovered first so earlier PF records do not remain split.
Where can a member seek help?
EPFO lists 14470 as its member helpdesk number. The grievance portal can be used for unresolved account issues.
