The impact on mileage, the loss of blend compatibility, and the cost of ethanol blends will determine the boundaries of the program as India reaches 20% ethanol in gasoline.

Key Highlights

  • India achieved the 20% ethanol in gasoline mark in 2025, five years ahead of the 2030 target.

  • SIAM has estimated a 2% to 4% loss of mileage with E20 fuel in some vehicles.

  • The government has laid out the Standards and Tax Preference for E22, E25, E27, and E30 fuels.

  • For the driver, the more meaningful comparison is the cost per kilometer versus the per liter price at the pump.

During the Ethanol Supply Year 2024-25, India accomplished the benchmark of having 20% ethanol in gasoline. On August 8, 2025, Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri reported the achievement through the Press Information Bureau. Initially, the goal was intended for 2030, but was later revised for 2025.

Singh Puri in a Press Information Bureau release on August 8, 2025. The government first aimed for 2030 to achieve this milestone. The target date was then moved to 2025.

The program encompasses Oil Marketing Companies, Sugar Mills, Grain Based Distilleries, Farmers and Vehicle Manufacturers. There is lower exposure of crude imports and an additional buyer for sugar cane, maize, and distressed food grain for farmers. For the driver, it is an immediate concern, will lower fuel costs cover the loss of mileage?

Official data shows that the increase happened quickly after 2022. The Petroleum Ministry’s Lok Sabha reply dated March 20, 2025 recorded the following figures.

The gains go beyond petrol pumps. A PIB release published on August 12, 2025 said the programme saved more than ₹1,44,087 crore in foreign exchange between 2014-15 and July 2025. It replaced nearly 245 lakh metric tonnes of crude oil and avoided around 736 lakh metric tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.

How Will E20 Affect Drivers Across India?

How Will E20 Affect Drivers Across India?

For farmers, the policy creates steady demand outside the food market. For India, every litre produced locally reduces some dependence on imported oil. Those gains are substantial, especially when global crude prices rise sharply.

The driver’s experience can be less straightforward. Reuters reported on August 31, 2025 that the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers expected mileage to fall by about 2% to 4% in certain vehicles. A car that earlier covered 15 kilometres on 1 litre may cover between 14.4 and 14.7 kilometres.

LoansJagat calculated how that difference can show up in daily spending. The example below uses a petrol price of ₹100 per litre.

A commuter covering 1000 km a month could spend around ₹130 to ₹270 more. Actual expenditure will vary with traffic conditions, air conditioning use, vehicle age, and local petrol prices. The LoansJagat fuel-budget guide tracks small variations in mileage and how they will affect monthly household expenditure.

What Do Vehicle Experts Want Before E25 And E30?

According to the June 2021 NITI Aayog roadmap, older pentaul 4-wheelers, which were designed to use plain petrol, would lose efficiency by about 6% to 7% when using E20. Vehicles designed to use E10 and calibrated to use E20 would lose efficiency by about 1% to 2%.

The industry is calling for a very gradual, very conservative shift away from E20. Autocar India on the 20th of May 2026, that higher grades of ethanol would require a check on engine calibration, as well as tests for engine durability, corrosion, and the fuel system materials.

Separate pump labels would help. So would model-wise mileage figures from manufacturers, rather than one national estimate covering every car and motorcycle. Older vehicle owners also need an easily searchable compatibility list before E25 or E30 reaches regular filling stations.

Conclusion

Reaching E20 gave India measurable savings in imports, emissions and foreign exchange. The next phase needs tougher road testing, honest mileage figures and fuel prices that leave drivers paying less for each kilometre.

FAQs

Can E20 Reduce Mileage?

Yes. SIAM estimated a reduction of around 2% to 4% for certain vehicles.

Is E20 Safe For Every Old Car?

Suitability depends on the model, manufacturing year, rubber parts, engine settings and the manufacturer’s instructions.

Why Is India Increasing Ethanol Use?

The programme cuts crude imports, supports domestic producers and sends additional payments to farmers.

Does E20 Petrol Reduce Vehicle Mileage And Shorten Engine Life?

Some vehicles may lose mileage, while engine impact depends on age, design, maintenance, and compatibility.

Can E20 Petrol Become Successful Across India?

Success depends on fair pricing, compatible vehicles, reliable supply, transparent labelling, and proven consumer savings.
