Key Takeaways

  • The Quad Foreign Ministers met on May 26, 2026, without setting any dates or places for the next leaders’ summit. The lack of clarity could raise questions about the future of the group, especially as it was to be hosted by India.

  • India had been chosen as the host country of the next Quad Leaders’ Summit at the 2024 Delaware summit. However, that summit took place in 2025 and is yet to occur in 2026.

Quad: Not Going Forward Without a Summit, No Date, and No Host Country?

The Quad foreign ministers’ meeting in New Delhi concluded without fixing a date and venue for the leaders of the four countries to meet. EAM S. Jaishankar, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Australian FM Penny Wong, and Japanese FM Toshimitsu Motegi attended.

In a joint statement, they only announced their willingness “to convene the Quad Leaders’ Summit.” They didn’t say when or where.

This affects India’s ability to develop its relationships in the region regarding its economic, political, and military interests, which include crucial issues of mineral resources and semiconductors.

Impact on India: Hosting Rights Cancelled and Missed Opportunities

Impact on India: Hosting Rights Cancelled and Missed Opportunities

India was set to host the Quad Summit under PM Narendra Modi. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri had said at the 2024 Delaware summit, “India would have been chosen to host it.”

Unfortunately, it never took place, and now the Quad Summit Chair is changing to Australia.

Here is the timeline of the Quad Summit meetings and their hosts:

Year

Planned Host

What Happened

2024

USA (Delaware)

Summit held in September 2024

2025

India

The summit did not take place

2026

India (pending)

No date set yet; chair moving to Australia

For India, this is another setback. The hosting of the Summit demonstrates its status in the region, and failing to do it twice sends the opposite signal.

Diplomatic signal now shows that there is an intention to resume the leaders’ meeting, which focuses on maritime security, critical technologies, and supply chains. Yet, without a clear date, it remains an intention only.

Commentaries: Quad Adrift and Losing Its Effectiveness

It’s no surprise that experts are rather pessimistic about the state of the Quad now.

Geostrategist Brahma Chellaney said that the foreign ministers “concluded their talks in a little more than an hour without announcing a summit.” This might “rob the Quad of its strategic coherence and punch.”

He further added that the idea of Indian hosting of the meeting became unrealistic due to Trump’s trade measures, and this led to “a Quad that is adrift and increasingly marginal to U.S. strategy.”

According to the Lowy Institute, postponement of the meeting made people doubt that this organisation “could withstand serious bilateral shocks, particularly between the two most consequential members.”

The solution to the problem might lie in scheduling arrangements. According to the Observer Research Foundation, even though foreign ministers outline the plans of the organisation, scheduling a summit remains crucial. They suggested the idea of scheduling a sideline meeting at the UNGA or G20 in December.

Australia’s Foreign Minister Penny Wong said the day was still not decided, but hosting three foreign ministers’ meetings “shows the commitment of all countries” to the process.

Conclusion

Quad is still alive, but it looks like it does not know which way to go. It failed to convene once again, which affects India badly as far as its hosting rights and strategic opportunities go. In addition, it casts some doubt on the true importance of the Quad for the USA under Trump.

FAQs

Why did Rubio visited the Amber Fort and the Taj Mahal a prior to the Quad meeting?

The visit by Marco Rubio is understood as a diplomatic gesture before the Quad Foreign Ministers’ Conference in India. Diplomatic visits are generally made to foster a good relationship between countries before an official meeting.

Is the Quad losing importance after the latest summit delay?
The delay in announcing a summit and host country for the next conference has caused anxiety about the future of the Quad. It is believed that constant postponement will diminish the power and strategic role of the alliance in the Indo-Pacific region.
