Banks & NBFCs Offers
Other services mentioned in this article
IDFC FIRST Bank is offering 7.35% on select NRE deposits, while PNB, HDFC Bank and SBI remain lower in the July 2026 current rate comparison.
Key Highlights
Official bank rate cards checked on 15 July 2026 show a wide difference in NRE fixed deposit returns across India. IDFC FIRST Bank offers the highest rate in this comparison at 7.35% for eligible deposits below ₹3 crore. IndusInd Bank follows at 7.00%, while PNB offers 6.60%, HDFC Bank offers 6.50% and SBI offers 6.45%.
The change affects NRIs sending overseas income to India, renewing a maturing deposit or building funds for family expenses. A higher rate can improve the rupee return over the selected term. Yet there is a downside. Early withdrawal may reduce or cancel interest, and a fall in the rupee can lower the amount received when funds are converted into a foreign currency.
A large share of NRE deposit money is eventually used in India. NRIs may keep these funds for their parents, property instalments, school fees, medical bills or a planned return home. A fixed deposit gives the family a known rupee rate without daily market movement. The higher July offers can therefore help depositors who will spend the maturity amount within India.
The benefit depends on timing. A person expecting a house payment after 13 months should not select a 3-year deposit only for the higher rate. Breaking that FD early could reduce the earnings. Families may find it easier to divide the amount into deposits maturing after 1 year, 18 months and 2 years. That leaves part of the money available sooner.

Bank terms give NRIs a firm warning. ICICI Bank states that an NRE FD closed before completing 1 year earns no interest. The Central Bank of India applies the same 1-year condition on its NRE deposits. It also lists a 1% penalty where an eligible deposit is closed before maturity after completing the first year.
IDFC FIRST Bank and HDFC Bank state that senior-citizen deposit rates do not apply to NRI customers. An overseas depositor aged above 60 should therefore use the regular NRE rate while calculating the maturity value. A workable option is to keep emergency money outside the fixed deposit and lock only the amount that is unlikely to be needed during the chosen term.

The highest advertised percentage does not tell the full story. Each bank uses its own tenure, deposit slab and withdrawal terms. Some special rates last slightly over 1 year. Others need a commitment of 2 or 3 years.
The table below compares the leading offers published by the banks. The rates apply to eligible NRE deposits and can change for new bookings or renewals.
IDFC FIRST Bank leads on the rate, but the depositor must stay invested for at least 500 days to enter the 7.35% slab. DBS Bank offers 6.85% for a shorter period of 376 to 400 days. Central Bank of India reaches 6.70% at 444 days, while PNB offers 6.60% for the same tenure.
For depositors choosing only among SBI, HDFC Bank and PNB, PNB gives the highest published return. HDFC Bank may suit someone who wants a longer tenure, while SBI’s 444-day offer remains below PNB’s rate by 0.15 percentage points.
Banks revised their deposit cards on different dates. SBI’s current NRE schedule took effect on 15 March 2026. PNB revised its NRE rates from 1 June. IDFC FIRST Bank and Central Bank of India changed their cards on 10 June, followed by DBS Bank on 16 June. ICICI Bank published another revision on 14 July.
The revisions continued an earlier period of deposit repricing. A LoansJagat report on HDFC Bank’s fixed deposit revision, published on 19 December 2025, reported that the change covered domestic, NRE and NRO deposits below ₹3 crore. The July 2026 ranking now includes newer special-tenure offers from other banks.
Banks set different rates for selected periods rather than offering 1 percentage across every tenure. A lender seeking deposits for roughly 1 to 2 years may price that period higher. Another bank may reserve its strongest rate for customers willing to stay for 3 years. This creates short windows where a special FD pays more than the bank’s standard tenure.
The deposit amount also changes the offer. Axis Bank pays 6.50% for its leading NRE tenure below ₹3 crore, but the rate rises to 6.60% for deposits from ₹3 crore to below ₹5 crore. PNB’s 6.60% rate applies below ₹3 crore. NRIs should therefore compare the same deposit size before choosing a bank.
The Income Tax Department states that the exemption for eligible NRE account interest has been retained in Schedule IV of the Income Tax Act, 2025. Eligibility continues to depend on the account holder meeting the required non-resident conditions.
An Indian tax exemption does not automatically remove taxes overseas. The country where the depositor lives may require NRE FD interest to be reported. An NRI in the US, UK, Canada, Australia or another jurisdiction should check the local rule before treating the income as fully tax-free.
Bank disclosures place tenure at the front of the decision. IDFC FIRST Bank says the minimum NRE FD tenure is 1 year. ICICI Bank also states that revised rates apply to both new deposits and renewed deposits. Axis Bank warns that rates can change without prior notice, so a rate seen earlier may not remain available on the booking date.
Official tax and insurance agencies add 2 separate checks. Tax exemption depends on continued eligibility, while deposit insurance has a fixed ceiling. Accounts held in the same right and capacity across branches of 1 bank are combined for insurance. Dividing money between branches of the same bank does not create a fresh ₹5 lakh cover.
IDFC FIRST Bank offers the highest published NRE FD return in this July 2026 comparison at 7.35%. IndusInd Bank follows at 7.00%, while DBS Bank offers 6.85% for a shorter tenure. PNB leads SBI and HDFC Bank with a 6.60% special rate for 444 days.
The final selection should match the date when the money will be used. NRIs should compare tenure, deposit size, early-closure conditions, overseas tax treatment and currency exposure before booking. The live rate card must also be checked on the transaction date, since banks may revise these offers without advance notice.
