The Indian government’s PM SVANidhi programme has been evolving from a pandemic-era relief scheme into a broader platform for financial inclusion. Initially launched in June 2020 to provide collateral-free working capital to street vendors, it now includes a UPI-linked RuPay credit card that offers instant credit access, rewards, and cashback on everyday business expenses and personal spends.

What Is the PM SVANidhi Credit Card?

The PM SVANidhi credit card is designed specifically for beneficiaries of the PM SVANidhi scheme who have repaid their second loan on time. It acts as a stepping stone from micro-credit to formal credit access, helping vendors handle urgent expenses and grow their businesses.

Issued typically as a lifetime free RuPay credit card (many banks such as Bank of Baroda offer this variant), the card starts with a credit limit of around ₹10,000. It earns reward points on eligible spending, one point for every ₹100 spent, which can be redeemed later as cashback. This model supports regular use without any annual fee burden.

Rewards and incentives are structured to encourage both consumption and business transactions. Holders can receive cashback up to ₹1,200 per year on regular retail transactions and an additional up to ₹400 on qualifying wholesale purchases within set monthly or quarterly limits, making the card practical for everyday cash flow.

Who Is Eligible and How to Apply?

Eligibility for the PM SVANidhi credit card is straightforward but tied to performance under the main scheme. Only street vendors who have successfully repaid their second PM SVANidhi loan are eligible to apply.

Application is fully digital and can be completed through the official PM SVANidhi portal or mobile app. This reduces paperwork and makes the process accessible even for vendors with limited digital proficiency. Cards are typically issued after verification of repayment and required identity documents.

By expanding access to credit without collateral and avoiding traditional income verification hurdles, this initiative aims to bring a significant informal segment into the formal financial fold.

Benefits Beyond Credit Access

The credit card is not merely a borrowing tool; it also supports financial formalisation and digital readiness. Vendors accustomed to cash transactions gain structured credit, encouraging greater digital acceptance and literacy.

Reward points and cashback make the card attractive for daily business expenses, helping vendors manage stock purchases, utility expenses, or unexpected costs without falling back on high-interest informal borrowing. The ability to redeem reward points for cashback further enhances value, effectively lowering the cost of credit usage.

Contactless and digital payment features built into the card also promote secure, touch-free transactions, important in a world where digital payments are rapidly becoming the norm.

The Bigger Picture: Financial Inclusion and Growth

The credit card facility forms part of a larger revamped PM SVANidhi scheme extended to March 2030, aimed at benefiting over 1.15 crore street vendors, including roughly 50 lakh new participants.

Under this expanded scheme, repeated loan repayment opens doors to gradually larger loan amounts, starting from ₹15,000 and progressing to ₹25,000 and ₹50,000 — and now includes formal credit through cards. The focus remains on sustainable livelihood support, offering working capital, digital incentives, and now credit lines in a single integrated pathway.

By linking credit discipline with tangible financial tools, the programme strives to shift street vendors from the informal ecosystem toward formal banking participation, improving their resilience and economic prospects in the long term.

Final Thoughts

The PM SVANidhi credit card is a practical advancement in the government’s effort to integrate millions of street vendors into the mainstream financial system. By rewarding timely loan repayment with credit access, cashback, and rewards, it encourages disciplined borrowing and spending.

It is a tailored instrument that recognises the daily cash requirements of micro-entrepreneurs and bridges formal credit gaps without adding cost burdens.

For many vendors, this card represents more than just plastic in the wallet, it is a tangible step toward financial inclusion, resilience, and entrepreneurial freedom.
