The State Bank of India has revised its ATM and Automated Deposit cum Withdrawal Machine transaction charges, making it costlier for customers to use other banks’ ATMs after exhausting their free monthly limit.
The new SBI ATM charges came into effect from December 1, 2025, following an upward revision in the interchange fee structure, as reported by multiple media outlets including India.com.
This is the second revision in 2025, the earlier one having taken place on February 1, 2025, according to NewsBytes. The move aligns with the Reserve Bank of India’s updated framework on ATM interchange fees issued in 2025 under the Payments and Settlement Systems segment on the RBI website, which allowed banks to recalibrate customer charges.
The changes primarily affect savings, salary and current account holders, while certain categories continue to remain protected from the hike.
For SBI savings account customers, the free monthly limit remains unchanged at five transactions across all centres. However, once this limit is exhausted, the cost of each transaction has gone up, as also explained by Free Press Journal.
This means frequent users of non-SBI ATMs will now pay ₹23 + GST per cash withdrawal and ₹11 + GST for balance enquiry or other non-financial transactions once the free quota is used, increasing the effective cost of routine banking under the revised SBI ATM charges.
The biggest change has been introduced for SBI salary account holders. Until now, they enjoyed unlimited free transactions at other bank ATMs. Under the new rules, they are now limited to 10 free transactions per month across all centres, as reported by The Economic Times.
Once this cap is breached, salary account holders will now have to pay the same revised SBI ATM charges as savings account customers.
For current account holders, the structure remains the same in terms of free entitlement, which continues to be nil. However, the per-transaction cost has increased.
They will now pay ₹23 + GST for each cash withdrawal and ₹11 + GST for each non-financial transaction, compared to the earlier ₹21 + GST and ₹10 + GST, respectively.
Not all customers will be affected by the revised SBI ATM charges. As per the bank’s clarification:
These exemptions ensure that financially vulnerable and priority segments are insulated from the impact of the hike.
SBI has stated that the revision follows an increase in the interchange fee structure, which banks pay each other when customers use another bank’s ATM. This change was enabled after the RBI’s 2025 notification on ATM fee rationalisation, available on the central bank’s website.
This explains why the bank has now revised its SBI ATM charges for the second time in 2025.
SBI has advised customers to rely more on its own network of over 63,000 ATMs and ADWMs across India, a figure also mentioned in its official communication and reported by the media.
By planning withdrawals and using SBI’s own machines, customers can largely avoid crossing free limits at other bank ATMs.

The revised SBI ATM charges make using other banks’ ATMs more expensive, but careful planning and greater use of SBI’s own network can help customers avoid these additional costs.
