Five money changes around September 1 will affect LPG users, business taxpayers, and Canara Bank customers, with deadlines, new charges, and PNG incentives approaching fast.
India enters September 2026 with several household-finance changes landing within 24 hours. Domestic LPG customers with pending e-KYC have been asked by oil marketing company officials to complete Aadhaar verification by August 31. Eligible non-audit business and professional taxpayers also face an August 31 return deadline, and some taxpayers choosing the old tax regime need Form 10-IEA by their applicable Section 139(1) due date. From September 1, a government incentive for domestic PNG connections begins. Canara Bank will also revise its own ATM free transaction limit and selected charges.
A proprietor who files late can face a fee of up to ₹5,000. A Canara Bank customer who keeps withdrawing cash after the free limit can pay ₹23 plus GST for each qualifying cash withdrawal. LPG users face a verification deadline, not a confirmed September 1 cylinder price hike. Over time, the PNG scheme could help households in city gas areas activate piped-gas connections.

LPG is likely to create the most questions because the deadline and the possible consequences are different. Oil-industry officials quoted in recent reports said the e-KYC window had been extended to August 31, 2026 after an earlier August cut-off. Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum customers can complete Aadhaar authentication through supported digital routes or at their distributor.
A household with e-KYC still pending on August 30 should finish it rather than wait for another extension. Industry reports have said refills are expected to continue after August 31, so automatic cancellation should not be treated as confirmed.
The second cooking-gas change is positive. The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas announced the Incentive Scheme for Promotion of Domestic PNG Connections on August 18, 2026. The Press Information Bureau said it will take effect from September 1. India had 1.74 crore domestic PNG connections when the scheme was announced. City gas companies will get an incentive to convert installed but unbilled connections into active household connections and expand PNG use.
The 5 developments apply to different groups, which is where many viral September lists go wrong.
A salaried employee who already filed an ITR may have nothing to do on the tax side. A freelancer using presumptive taxation may have an August 31 deadline. A State Bank of India customer is not affected by Canara Bank's own-ATM revision.

Taxpayers need to start with the return form, not social-media deadline posts. The Income Tax Department AY 2026-27 guidance, last reviewed on August 25, 2026, states that the due date for ITR-4 is August 31, 2026. Its broader guidance also places eligible non-audit business and professional cases in the August 31 filing window.
Late filing is where the bill appears. The department says a belated return may still be filed, subject to law, but Section 234F can bring a fee of up to ₹5,000. Interest may apply if tax remains unpaid, and some taxpayers can lose the ability to carry forward specified losses. Waiting for a rumoured extension after the accounts are ready is a poor trade.
Form 10-IEA needs a separate check. Eligible taxpayers with business or professional income who want to opt out of the default new tax regime must follow the prescribed form process within the applicable due date. LoansJagat highlighted a practical risk in its August 24, 2026 analysis: a business taxpayer should confirm that Form 10-IEA has been filed successfully before relying on the old-regime selection in the return. Filing the ITR does not repair a missed form deadline.
Business-income taxpayers cannot switch freely between the old and new regimes every year. Anyone who used Form 10-IEA earlier should check the previous acknowledgement and re-entry history. Canara Bank customers have a simpler job. The bank's service-charge schedule, updated on August 1, 2026, says regular savings account holders will receive 5 free financial or non-financial transactions each calendar month at Canara Bank ATMs from September 1, down from 6. Senior citizens retain 8. Cash withdrawals after the free allowance rise from ₹20 plus GST to ₹23 plus GST.
An extra ₹3 looks small, but repeated use adds up. A customer making 6 chargeable withdrawals would pay ₹18 more before GST than under the earlier rate. Canara Bank is also reducing Green PIN regeneration beyond the free limit from ₹23 plus GST to ₹5 plus GST. That part could easily disappear beneath headlines about higher ATM fees.

The August 31 tax deadline is part of the revised AY 2026-27 filing calendar, not a last-minute extension. The Union Budget 2026-27 introduced staggered dates. ITR-1 and ITR-2 filers generally retained July 31, while eligible non-audit business cases received time until August 31. Business returns often need turnover details, expense records, and presumptive-income checks that salaried returns do not.
That is also why August 31 should not be advertised as a deadline for everyone. Many salaried taxpayers already crossed their July 31 due date. Audit cases have later statutory dates. Income type and return form decide the deadline.
LPG e-KYC followed another route. Oil companies have been pushing Aadhaar authentication to verify domestic connections. Earlier August cut-offs were followed by another extension, taking the reported deadline to August 31. Distributors remain important where Aadhaar, mobile-number, or biometric problems arise.
The PNG policy has been building for months. Some city gas connections were installed but not producing billed consumption. From September 1, the new incentive gives distributors a commercial reason to convert more of those dormant lines into active household accounts. For a family with the pipe already reaching the building but no active supply, that is far more relevant than a headline suggesting everyone will get cheaper gas on September 1.

The Income Tax Department has made the filing window explicit. Its portal carries the August 31 date for relevant returns, while support lines were scheduled to operate 24x7 from August 24 until 23:59 on August 31. Taxpayers facing validation, login, or e-verification trouble therefore have an official support route during the final week.
On PNG, the Petroleum Ministry said the September scheme is designed to speed up active domestic connections and widen piped-gas access. Households will benefit only where a city gas network reaches the locality. A tenant in an apartment block with an existing gas line may see a quicker route to activation. A household in a district without that network will not see the same change.
Canara Bank's published schedule identifies September 1 as the effective date for the revised own-ATM free limit, the ₹23 plus GST cash-withdrawal charge after that limit, and the revised insufficient-funds charge. These rules apply to Canara Bank customers. Treating them as a nationwide ATM change would be inaccurate.
From a consumer-finance reading, the tax deadline deserves the closest attention because a missed filing or regime-selection step can be harder to correct than an extra ATM fee. Consider a self-employed consultant who has chosen the old regime, has the return ready, but forgets Form 10-IEA. The problem is no longer simply a late upload. The taxpayer's intended tax treatment itself can come under question.
LPG customers have a different priority. Finish the e-KYC if it is pending, keep the confirmation, then continue watching official messages from the oil company or distributor. There is little value in reacting to social-media posts that claim every unverified connection will be cancelled on September 1 when no such blanket outcome has been formally confirmed.
September 1 brings several changes, but they need to be read separately. LPG users have a verification deadline. Eligible business taxpayers face return-filing and, in some cases, Form 10-IEA requirements. Canara Bank customers should watch the lower own-ATM free limit. The PNG measure moves the other way, with the government trying to get more household connections working.
The expensive mistake is assuming a viral list applies to everyone. A quick check of the ITR form, bank account, or LPG status can show whether action is needed before August 31. Some filing errors are far easier to prevent than repair.
The domestic PNG incentive and revised Canara Bank ATM charges start on September 1. Several tax and LPG deadlines fall on August 31.
No. It applies to specified non-audit business and professional cases. The applicable ITR form and income type decide the due date.
A belated return may still be available, but a late fee of up to ₹5,000 and applicable interest can arise.
Industry reports have not confirmed automatic permanent stoppage from September 1. Customers should still complete verification before the August 31 deadline.
From September 1, qualifying cash withdrawals at Canara Bank ATMs beyond the free limit will cost ₹23 plus GST.
