Open PhonePe, tap your profile icon, go to Payment Settings, tap AutoPay, pick the mandate, and tap Delete AutoPay. Confirm with your UPI PIN and the mandate is gone. No more debits from that service after this point.
Profile > Payment Settings > AutoPay > pick the mandate > Delete AutoPay > confirm with UPI PIN. There's no pause button in PhonePe, only delete. The money that is already deducted will not be refunded via the app.
OTT plans, insurance premiums, SIPs, electricity bills, most Indians have at least one PhonePe mandate running in the background. PhonePe has a 46.2% share in the Indian UPI market as of May 2026, and thus it is the app that most people would choose. The main reason why someone would want to remove autopay is either because the subscription expired, the payment is under dispute, or the account was compromised. Below is where the AutoPay menu actually lives, what deleting a mandate does and doesn't do, and how the RBI's rules protect you either way.
It's a UPI mandate that lets a merchant pull a fixed or capped amount from your account on a schedule you agreed to. This facility operates on NPCI’s AutoPay feature of UPI 2.0 meant for utility bills, EMIs, and subscriptions. You give your approval once by using your UPI PIN and post that, there is no more need for any intervention from your end.
In Six Steps; Same Process for Android & iOS Users.
That mandate drops off your active list the moment you confirm, matching what's laid out in this PhonePe autopay cancellation walkthrough.

Because the option doesn't exist yet, PhonePe only lets you delete a mandate, not pause it, so you'd have to rebuild the whole thing later if you want it back, as pointed out in this PhonePe cancellation guide. This trips people up with seasonal payments like a yearly magazine or travel insurance you only need for a few months.
Everything from the next billing cycle onward stops. Anything already charged stays charged. If a debit went through before you cancelled, that's between you and the merchant, since PhonePe doesn't reverse completed payments on its own.
It doesn't. Deleting a PhonePe mandate has nothing to do with your credit file. The catch comes if that mandate was paying an EMI or a card bill. Once it's gone, you're the one who has to pay it on time, manually.
There's a debit cap, and there's advance notice. The RBI e-mandate framework requires banks to alert you at least 24 hours before any autopay debit goes through, so you get a real chance to cancel first if you want to, a rule spelled out in RBI's own press release on the framework.

Rohit Sharma from Pune set up a ₹499 monthly OTT mandate in January 2025. He cancelled the actual subscription in June but never touched the PhonePe mandate. PhonePe kept pulling ₹499 every month for five more months, ₹2,495 gone before he noticed. Once he found the AutoPay menu, deleting it took him under two minutes.
Six taps and a PIN, that's the whole job: Profile, Payment Settings, AutoPay, Delete. What trips people up isn't the deletion itself; it's forgetting PhonePe can't pause anything, only kill it outright. Take a look at your autopay list every two months, and you will stop paying for something you have long abandoned.
