EPFO’s cheque-free online claims have helped around 7 crore members, reduced document-related rejections and supported a record rise in settlements during FY 2025-26 across India.
The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation settled 83,094,388 claims in FY 2025-26, up from 60,159,608 claims in FY 2024-25. According to the
The short-term benefit is straightforward. Members have 1 fewer document to arrange while seeking PF money for an eligible need. Over time, fewer upload errors may reduce rejections and office visits. Yet digital filing still depends on accurate Aadhaar, bank, UAN and employment records. Higher advance withdrawals may also reduce the retirement savings left for later years.

A personalised cheque book is not available in every household. Some members use basic savings accounts, while others keep an old passbook that may not carry updated branch details. Earlier, these workers had to obtain suitable bank proof, scan it and upload a readable copy before completing an online PF claim.
The revised process helps workers file through smartphones, common service centers, or shared computers. Poor cameras and slow internet connections can spoil an uploaded image. EPFO has now removed that failure point. A worker facing a hospital payment, job loss or education expense can submit the claim without searching for a cheque first.
The official data also shows that the cheque waiver formed part of a wider shift towards automatic settlements and direct member access.
The total of 8.3 crore represents claims, not separate individuals. A single member may file more than 1 eligible application. The 5.51 crore advance and partial-withdrawal claims also deserve attention. Easier access is useful during an emergency, but repeated withdrawals can leave less money earning interest for retirement.
Provident fund advisers treat the cheque waiver as the removal of duplicate proof, not removal of verification. EPFO still checks whether the member’s Aadhaar, UAN profile and bank information match. A different spelling, outdated IFSC code, inactive bank account or missing date of exit may send the claim for manual review.
LoansJagat’s analysis of the official figures points to a practical difference between easier filing and guaranteed quick payment. Removing 1 upload shortens the application, but it cannot repair incorrect records. Members should check their bank account and employment details before filing. After submission, this LoansJagat guide on checking PF withdrawal status explains how claims can be tracked through the UAN portal, UMANG app and EPFO’s status service.

EPFO first relaxed the upload requirement on 28 May 2024. The pilot applied to selected KYC-updated members whose bank details, Aadhaar and other records passed prescribed digital validations. EPFO wanted to test whether claims could move safely without a cheque image.
By April 2025, around 1.7 crore members had used the pilot. EPFO then extended the waiver to every member filing an eligible online claim. The Press Information Bureau announcement dated 3 April 2025 estimated that another 6 crore members would benefit immediately. The projected combined reach exceeded 7.7 crore members.
The same reform removed employer approval after a bank verified the account linked with a UAN. Before this change, a member could complete bank verification and still wait for the employer’s digital approval. The new route reduced that dependence.
Transfer claims had already been simplified from 15 January 2025, with employer approval removed in most eligible cases. EPFO also introduced Aadhaar-based profile correction and automatic PF balance transfers. These related changes help explain why FY26 claim settlements rose by around 38.12%.
Shobha Karandlaje told the Rajya Sabha that EPFO had completely removed the cheque leaf and attested passbook image requirement from April 2025. Her written reply said around 7 crore members had benefited. It also linked the change with fewer rejections caused by poor-quality uploads and fewer related complaints.
Union Labour and Employment Minister Mansukh Mandaviya had earlier described the April 2025 reforms as an effort to make claims faster and easier for members and employers. The ministry said the extra bank document was no longer required because EPFO had already matched the account holder’s information while seeding the bank account with the UAN.
For employers, the reform removes a repetitive approval stage. Companies must still maintain correct contribution and employment records. Members gain more control over bank seeding, profile corrections and transfer requests, although EPFO retains the final verification role.
EPFO’s cheque-free process removes a document that often caused avoidable rejection. Around 7 crore members have used the facility, while FY26 recorded 8.3 crore settled claims.
Accurate digital records still decide how quickly an application moves. A verified bank account, matching Aadhaar details and correct employment information give the member a better chance of receiving PF money without repeated applications or office visits.
No, EPFO removed the cheque or attested passbook image requirement for eligible online claims in April 2025.
The rejection may reflect an outdated processing remark. The member should verify bank KYC, reapply correctly and raise an EPFO grievance if it happens again.
No. Only eligible auto-mode advance claims may finish within 3 days. Claims needing manual verification can take longer.
EPFO settled 83,094,388 claims, compared with 60,159,608 claims during FY 2024-25.
Members should verify their UAN, Aadhaar details, active bank account, current IFSC code and employment exit date.
