Digital payments in India are evolving. Traditionally, Unified Payments Interface (UPI) and credit card rewards ran on separate tracks. UPI was tied to bank accounts, while reward points came from card swipes or online spends. But now, linking certain credit cards to UPI means everyday bill payments and shop purchases can earn reward points — turning routine spends into value-adding transactions.
National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) changed the game by allowing RuPay credit cards to be linked to UPI apps such as PhonePe, Google Pay, Paytm and BHIM. This means when you scan a merchant’s QR code and select your RuPay credit card as the mode of payment, the charge goes to your card instead of your bank account.

Many banks treat these UPI payments as retail card transactions, making them eligible for reward points or cashback just like traditional card spends. However, not all cards offer the same reward rates, and these perks depend on the card provider and specific scheme terms.
Reward points accumulate only on merchant transactions carried out through UPI with your linked credit card. These include payments at grocery stores, pharmacies, restaurants and other businesses. You won’t earn rewards on peer-to-peer transfers, such as sending money to friends or family, or on wallet top-ups.
Each card issuer sets its own rules around how many points you get per rupee spent. For example, some cards might offer 2 points per ₹100 on UPI transactions, while others vary or cap rewards in certain categories.
Although linking your credit card to UPI can be rewarding, there are some limits and charges to watch out for. Many banks impose daily caps on transaction amounts when paying via credit card through UPI, and all such spends count against your card’s credit limit. Standard credit card billing rules apply, and costs can escalate if you carry a balance past the due date.

Rewards don’t come without responsibility. If you miss your payment due date, interest charges kick in — just as on regular card usage. The strategy works best when you pay your monthly bill in full and regularly scan for eligible merchant transactions.
To make this feature count, use your RuPay credit card for purchases you would already make via UPI — groceries, dining, utility bills or pharmacy spends. Choosing the right credit card with strong reward rates on UPI spends can add up to meaningful returns over time. It pays to check your card’s terms, as some issuers may offer higher reward rates or extra incentives for UPI transactions.
Linking a RuPay credit card to your UPI app doesn’t change the convenience of UPI, but it adds an extra layer of benefit by letting routine payments earn reward points. For those who are diligent with credit card repayments and mindful of limits, this feature turns everyday spends into a subtle, ongoing loyalty boost.
