Today, Saturday, 28 February 2026, all bank branches across India are closed. This closure is because it falls on the fourth Saturday of the month, which is a scheduled bank holiday according to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) holiday calendar.

Why Are Banks Closed?

  • The RBI holiday calendar categorises bank holidays into three types:
    • Negotiable Instruments Act holidays
    • RTGS (Real Time Gross Settlement) holidays
    • Banks’ closing of accounts
  • Under these rules, banks across India remain closed on the second and fourth Saturdays of every month. Therefore, 28 February 2026 is a holiday for all scheduled commercial banks.
  • This applies to both public and private banks, including major lenders such as SBI, PNB, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank and others.

What Does This Mean for Customers?

Even though bank branches are closed today:

  • Online banking services continue to work normally, including internet and mobile banking, UPI transfers, and ATM withdrawals.
  • Services that require in-branch presence, like cheque deposits, issuing demand drafts, locker access, and updating passbooks, will not be available.

This bank holiday does not affect digital banking operations, so customers can still carry out most transactions electronically.

How Bank Holidays Work in India

According to the RBI schedule:

  • Second and fourth Saturdays of every month are bank holidays.
  • All Sundays are holidays for bank branches.
  • Regional or festival holidays may result in additional closures in specific states.

This pattern helps customers plan their banking needs ahead of time.

Summary

  • Physical bank branches are closed, but digital services remain open.
  • Knowing these calendar rules helps avoid last-minute surprises and ensures smoother planning for transactions that require branch visits.
