Key Takeaways
India’s Mudra scheme has crossed another milestone, but the latest numbers also show that most borrowers still remain in the smallest-ticket loan segment.
The Pradhan Mantri MUDRA Yojana completed 11 years on 8 April 2026. In its official release dated 8 April 2026, the Press Information Bureau said PMMY has sanctioned 57.79 crore loans and disbursed ₹40.07 lakh crore as on 27 March 2026. The scheme was launched on 8 April 2015 to provide collateral-free loans to non-corporate, non-farm micro and small enterprises.
In the short run, the update strengthens access to formal credit for small traders, service units and self-employed borrowers.
The weak spot is visible too. A large share of borrowing is still concentrated in Shishu loans, which points to limited scale-up for many enterprises even after years of scheme expansion.
The latest official data shows 67% of Mudra beneficiaries are women, about 20% are first-time entrepreneurs, and 51% belong to SC, ST and OBC communities. The same release said 12.15 crore loans worth nearly ₹12 lakh crore have gone to new entrepreneurs. That keeps PMMY central to self-employment credit at the grassroots level.
The distribution pattern is equally important. By number of accounts, Shishu forms 74%, Kishor 24%, Tarun 2% and Tarun Plus 0.004%. By sanctioned amount, the split is 32%, 43%, 25% and 0.095%. This shows the scheme has wide reach, though movement into larger expansion-stage credit remains slower.
The build-up to this milestone began earlier. DD News reported on 8 April 2025 that PMMY had completed 10 years with over 52.07 crore loans sanctioned and ₹33.19 lakh crore sanctioned, while ₹32.40 lakh crore had been disbursed by February 2025. LoansJagat, in a borrower explainer published on 29 July 2025, outlined Mudra categories and eligibility, offering consumer-side context.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said PMMY has expanded entrepreneurship and credit access at the grassroots. Economic Times, in a report updated on 9 April 2026, also highlighted the crossing of the ₹40 lakh crore disbursement mark. Newsonair separately reported the 11-year milestone on 8 April 2026.
PMMY’s 11-year record shows how deeply small-ticket formal credit has spread across India. The next phase will be judged by how many borrowers move from entry-level loans to durable business expansion.
