Fintechs Eye Agentic Commerce As AI Agents Get Ready To Pay On Users’ Behalf

Fintechs are redesigning payments for agentic commerce, where AI agents shop and pay. In India, pilots are active, but trust controls decide scale.

Agentic commerce is moving fast from demos to deal-making. AI agents can already help with discovery, comparison, and checkout, and payment firms want to sit in the middle of that flow.

The Economic Times reported on 20 February 2026 that fintechs are gearing up to link digital payments with agentic platforms such as ChatGPT and Claude. The pitch is convenience, but the real commercial prize is owning authentication, fraud checks, and consent at the moment an agent tries to pay. For India, it is a high-volume opportunity with high scrutiny.

What Is Changing In Payments?

What Is Changing In Payments?

Traditional checkout assumes a human taps “Pay”. Agentic commerce flips it. A user delegates a task, and the agent attempts to complete it instantly. That raises new risks: consent boundaries, scam pressure, and dispute ambiguity.

LoansJagat’s 2 February 2026 note flags how fast payments can be exploited through urgency scams, impersonation and phishing. Globally, OpenAI introduced Instant Checkout on 29 September 2025, signalling that in-chat purchases are no longer theoretical. The next fight is “trusted authorisation”.

Where Fintechs Want To Place Their Bets?

India’s payment players are not just adding chatbots. They are building “agent-ready” payment plumbing so transactions can close inside a conversation.

On 20 February 2026, The Economic Times described fintechs preparing integrations to bridge AI-led search with real transactions. A headline example is Razorpay’s partnership with superU AI, disclosed at the India AI Summit and updated by ET on 20 February 2026. The system is positioned as real-time “agentic payments”, combining conversational intent detection with Razorpay’s payment infrastructure.

Pine Labs is also betting big. It announced an OpenAI collaboration dated 19 February 2026 to build merchant-facing capabilities that can take limited financial decisions within guardrails. The same week, Mastercard showcased a fully authenticated agentic commerce transaction in India at the summit circuit, but indicated rollout depends on approvals.

Here is a quick scan of the most concrete moves.

Deal Or Demo

What It Signals

Razorpay + superU AI (ET updated 20 Feb 2026)

Conversational flow that triggers payment at the intent moment

Pine Labs + OpenAI (19 Feb 2026)

Merchant payment stack with limited autonomous decisioning

Mastercard summit demo (reported 17 Feb 2026)

Authenticated agent-led transaction, pending regulatory clarity

OpenAI Instant Checkout (29 Sept 2025)

In-chat purchases, powered by Stripe and an open protocol

The pattern is clear: payments firms want to become the trust layer, not a utility at the end.

How We Got Here: Global Proof Points And India’s Readiness?

OpenAI’s push changed the tone of the debate. Reuters reported on 29 September 2025 that Instant Checkout launched with Etsy and Shopify, with over 1,000,000 Shopify merchants expected to be added. The market reaction was sharp: Etsy rose 7.3% and Shopify 4.5% on the day. OpenAI also stated it would open-source parts of the agentic commerce protocol while Stripe powers checkout.

In Asia, the agentic shopping idea is spreading beyond payments. Reuters reported on 19 February 2026 that Google and Sea are developing an “agentic shopping prototype” for Shopee. Shopee held a 52% share of Southeast Asia’s e-commerce market in 2024, which makes this more than a lab exercise.

On the India side, the shift is being framed as voice and chat-led buying. superU AI’s 19 February 2026 blog claims India sees 1,000,000,000 voice searches per month, pitching agentic payments as a natural next step.

Here is what must change inside the payments stack.

What Needs Solving

Why It Is Critical For Agentic Checkout

Consent controls

Spend limits, merchant allowlists, and step-up verification when risk spikes

Safer credentials

Tokenised or scoped payment credentials so raw details are not exposed

Fraud and scam resistance

Scam tactics thrive on speed and urgency, so education and friction cues become essential

Dispute clarity

Liability gets complicated when an agent executes a purchase on delegated authority

It becomes obvious why fintechs are running pilots now. Whoever nails consent plus safety could own conversion.

Stakeholders Put Their Positions On Record

Razorpay and superU AI are presenting agentic payments as “transactions that close themselves” with minimal manual steps, per ET’s 20 February 2026 update and superU’s 19 February 2026 post. Pine Labs says the OpenAI tie-up is aimed at expanding agentic commerce for merchants. Mastercard has publicly linked rollout to approvals.

Conclusion

Agentic commerce is pushing payments into a new role: permission manager, risk engine, and dispute referee, all inside chat. India’s fintechs are moving early, but consumer trust will decide speed.
